…and I in my cap…

The Christmas pajamas are officially done!  And we had *just* enough fabric left over to accessorize.  We made each of the boys these stocking caps (the girls get boring headbands).  They were so easy to make, with such a fun result, that I’m going to quickly show you how to make your own.  We used our left over knit, but you could totally make some out of a large striped tee shirt. 

 

Sewn Stocking Cap Tutorial:

 

Grab your knit or tee shirt and lay it out as two layers with a fold at the edge (if you’re using a shirt, you’re golden here as this part is done for you).  If you are doing stripes, which you totally should, make sure your stripes line up.

 

 

Take a straight edge and cut a diagonal line up to about an inch from the corner of the fold.  I didn’t measure here, I just kind of eye balled, on the big side, what I figured would be generous for the size of their heads for the base.  Or so.  I know, this is kind of a crappy tutorial, but it was last minute, so yeah, sorry.

Now, you should be able to get two hats for the work of one, so cut a straight line from the corner of the cut diagonal back down the the top of the fabric (where the other future hat’s point is) (see pictures)

Right sides together, sew up the diagonal of the hat cut on the fold

And sew up the diagonal and the straight edge of the hat cut on the edge

Turn

Now measure your kid’s head.  Minus one inch

Cut a strip of more knit two inches thick and the above measurement long

Fold the length in half, right sides together

Sew up the raw edge, making a tube-like thing

Turn and fold the tube in half so the sewn edge is completely enclosed

Now match your seams on the band (the strip we just worked with) to the opening of the hat.  The fold of the band needs to point up towards the top of the hat, with the raw edges of the hat and band all together.

Stretch the band as you sew the hat and band together, as you would if attaching elastic

Flip the band down

and presto! Stocking cap just in time to wait up for Old Saint Nick!

I whipped up six of these in about 45 minutes, including time to deal with this naughty little elf.  So you have plenty of time to crank out one or two for a bare-headed kid on your list before Christmas Eve.
