Me, two months
I know, how could I ever compete with those pigtails, or her ability to hold her head up? Seriously, I was two months old when I wore this dress? I was enormous!
I’m the fourth of five daughters. I’m sure this dress was worn by at least one other sister. But my mom saved it and gave it to me when I was pregnant with Ivy. The elastic in the left arm needs to be replaced. The applique is tearing away. But other than that, it’s in surprisingly good condition.
I think it’s so fun to have little things like this from my childhood to compare with my daughter. My mother in law gave me some clothing she’d hung onto of my husband’s from his babyhood. We tried them on the boys, but never got pictures before they outgrew the pieces. I’m sad about that. But we still have the clothing, so maybe our grandkids will get to try them on one day?
It’s fun to compare sizes, as well as styles and fabrics. I remember a sweater we had that was my dad’s from the ‘40s. It was crazy itchy and I thought for years all of the clothes from that time must have been super uncomfortable. I wonder if my mom still has it?
Since having Ivy, I’ve been giving away and getting rid of pretty much all of our baby items, clothing included. I’ve saved a few things, but mostly just because I’ve made them and I’m not sure anyone else would really want them. I’m not sure how long I’ll hold onto them, or if I’ll end up passing them along to future generations one day. Right now, they’re just sentimental items for me.
Do you have any clothing from when you were a baby still laying about? Do you hold onto things your children wore with the intention of passing them onto grandchildren?
And, have baby collars always been so temperamental?

i have a dress, it was bought by my nana for her 1st grandchild, he and the next 3 grandchildren were also boys so i got it. As the only girl i kept it and put it on my daughter (its yellow with bunnys hopping round on it, its adorable). I shall keep it incase my 2 have a little girl. its special, a link to a nana i never knew as she died long before i was born.
my mother in law saves everything... she gives me tights from when her daughters were small to pass on to my daughters. Tights with holes in the feet, that she held onto all these years. I am a stark contrast ... I have a pair of overalls from my first daughter, a pair of shoes from my second, and I'm not sure what I'll hold onto from my son yet. I keep a special item that is near and dear to my heart from babyhood, and that's about it!
(I do get a special kind of joy from seeing my kids handmedowns on my nephews and nieces though!)
that dress is adorable! I love the jagged edge on top. Both cute babies, but those pigtails!!
My mom saved so many things that I wore as a baby. And yes, my two girls have worn them too. Like the outfit I wore home from the hospital, they wore it too. Fun and a little scary.
I may use the words 'cute' and 'darling' way too much but those babies are both so cute! And the dress is darling.
Yes, baby collars are horribly temperamental! And both you and Ivy look adorable in the dress... but those pigtails are just too cute. =)
So far, I haven't given away any baby stuff, since I'm hoping we will have more babies down the road. Hopefully I won't go through an organization spree and toss everything!
Sorry Sabe but I actually laughed out load when I saw that pic on your blog! Ah, the memories! I can't believe the white parts aren't more yellowed.
I'm wishing mom had saved the coolattes (sp?) that she made for us, I'm thinking Elaine would really rock them now!
Wow, my post got all weird: trade load to loud, and Elaine to Ella. Make more sense now?
Today I JUST pulled out a box of clothing my mom left the last time she was here. In it were several pieces of clothing and dresses I wore as a baby and small girl. I would love to put them on my little girl, but I didn't get them in time. She is now in a 2T or a 3T (she is a TALL child...); and while I was her age (18-24 months) when I wore these items, there's no way I could squeeze her into them -- old stretched elastic and all.
Still... holding on to them for sentimental reasons too.
Oh, Anna, how sad that she's outgrown them before she got to wear them!
How sweet! Love those pig tails : )
My mother & mother in law also saved a few baby clothes. It's funny to see the differences in styles and fabric. One dress she saved was made out the worst faux silk fabric imaginable. I'm certain I was fussy whenever I wore it : )
My most prized is a gorgeous, crocheted, blue and white variegated dress that a great aunt made for my mother. It's just a very simple dress with slightly puffed sleeves and it's in pristine condition too!
My mother wore it when she was about 8 months old for a portrait, then I wore it when I was around 2 yrs old (I was evidently much smaller than she was!). My daughter wore it when she was 4 months old and again at a year old for a portrait. We have a picture frame with all three of us wearing it. What a treasure!
I hope you get to see your little dress on your grandchildren as well!
