We’re going to score tonight!

I made a bag.

But first, this

Yes, that is Michelle Pfeiffer in a musical.  Only the greatest musical of all time!  I seriously could quote this movie in it’s entirety by the time I was nine.

Right now my mother is totally cringing.  Blame it on my older sisters, Mom!

So anyway, a few months ago I came up with an idea for a bag.  I wanted it to kind of look like a bowling bag.   And from the point that I decided on that inspiration, the above referenced song has been stuck in my head.  Then I found the perfect fabric. IMG_6669

I mean it totally matches the costuming in the scene!
It also happened to be a massive men’s overcoat.

So I chopped that all to pieces and made

as modeled by my beautiful friend, Camilla

I love that it looks small from the front but the wide sides and double-zip top allow for a crazy amount of space inside.
I can easily fit my big ol’ camera with plenty of room to spare

The zippered front pocket stashes away all kinds of fun things.

There’s an interior pocket to hold all those small items that can get lost at the bottom of a bagIMG_6756
And a key fob, since my favorite activity is loosing my keys every chance I getIMG_6757
I could probably even try to get a bowling ball in there.
But I didn’t.

I was able to cannibalize most of the coat for use in the bag’s design and construction.
A small sampling:

If you happen to have a large overcoat in need of a complete makeover, have I got the tutorial for you!  Or I guess you could just buy fabric off the bolt.  Whatever.

**The pattern pieces are HERE.  I can’t figure out how to combine scanned PDFs with other PDFs through DropBox.  So you need both the instructions via the button and the pattern.**

Standard pattern-sharing disclosures:
-I’m not a professional, I’m self-taught, and the pattern reflects that. But it’s free, so that’s what you get. It’s the pattern and construction process I used and should get you the same look, assuming that’s what you’re going for. Or it can be used to help draft out your own ideas. Or you could use it to line a bird cage. I’m good with whatever.
-When printing the pattern, make sure to unclick the “auto-center” options, etc.
-If you do decide to get all crazy and make something off of my patterns and ideas, I’d love to know about it. Feel free to shoot me an email or comment. It totally makes my day.

A funky bag with a lot to offer.  You should totally make one.  Your mother would approve.

Oh cute!! It looks like a bigger version of the bag Zooey Deschanel toted around in this past week's episode. I was wondering where to get one.. thanks for the pattern pieces!

Saw the title of your post in Reader and began singing to myself, "We're gonna score, score, score, To-Night!"
