This is the table runner I made my mother in law for Christmas. When I first started sketching out my idea for the pieced top, it reminded me of windows in the Craftsman style, so that’s what I’m calling it, for better or worse.
Materials:
-35 5*5 inch squares (a little less than a full Charm Pack) variety, but coordinating fabric. I used a Charm Pack of Moda Prayer Flag.
-2 Yards natural cotton muslin
-quilt batting
-2 Yards natural cotton muslin
-quilt batting
Cut the charms/squares as follows:
10 – 2.5*2.5” quarters (A)
17 – 2.5*5” strips (B)
4-leave as 5*5” (C)
This is a basic sketch of how the top will be laid out:
| First Strip | Middle Strip | Third Strip |
| A B A B B A B A A A B A B A A B A A B A B | C AA B AA AA C B B B BB AA C B BB B B AA AA B C BB B AA | A B A B A A B B A A B A A B A A A B B B A |
For the middle strip you need to break down the sewing of the pieces into horizontal sections. So go through your pieces, and everywhere there will be two As next to each other, sew those two As and put aside. For two Bs side by side, do the same.
Once you’ve combined all horizontal segments, you need to square all the middle section pieces to the same lengths. This is because the As and Bs that have been sewn side by side are now resulting in more narrow horizontals than the pieces that are still unsewn:
Once you’ve squared all the pieces to the same widths, you are ready to sew the center section pieces into one long strip.
So now you should have three long strips: two 2.5 * 60 and one 4.5*60
Cut two long strips of muslin 2.5 by 60 inches long
Sew the top together: 2.5 inch pieced strip, muslin, 4.5 inch pieced strip, muslin, 2.5 inch pieced strip.
Cut muslin and batting apx. 60 inches by14.5 inches
Layer the top, batting and muslin, baste together,
For the binding, (I *swear* I took pictures of the whole process, but can only find a few now) take your extra charms and cut some random As and Bs. Then cut 2.5inch strips of muslin of varying lengths. I didn’t measure, I just cut a bunch of strips. Sew the As and Bs to the muslin strips, forming a long tape with randomly placed pieces along it.
Using a bias tape tool, make into bias tape. Depending on how large your bias tape tool is, you may have to trim the width of the strip down first.
Use to bind edges of runner
You can also use any extra tape to make a bow for gifting
