One-piece Bound Buttonhole Pockets

The Book says this pocket, “resembles a bound buttonhole and is constructed similarly.  This type of pocket is usually made of a lightweight fabric.”

Start by marking your pocket placement on the main fabric

You only need one piece for the pocket.  It needs to be double the pattern piece size, plus one inch in length on one end.IMG_6058
Here you can see I marked the “middle”, as it is offset by the 1 inch allowance

Place the pocket piece, right sides facing, on the main fabric with the center line matching up with the pocket placement markings

Baste in place

Sew a rectangle 1/4 inch around the desired pocket opening

Cut the opening through all layers of fabric

Pull pocket to backside, through opening

Now this part is weird.  You have to kind of fold (the Book says make welts or lips) the pocket at the opening, both top and bottom

Baste the welts in place along the opening

Now stitch in the ditch (along the seam lines) the welts in place

Finish the pocket on the other side and remove basting
