And now for what my husband has affectionatly named "Church Waders".
Altered from the Lil Blue Boo's Paper Doll Dress pattern .
I attempted, without a pattern, to make something like these a couple months ago. Not so great. But thanks to the Lil Blue Boo's pattern being not only super easy to follow, but totally what I was looking for (only in dress form) I was able to get exactly what my heart wanted and my brain couldn't translate, with just a few alterations.
I started off with a mens pair of dress slacks purchased at a local thrift store.
As opposed to the other overalls I made from this pattern, I left the main body piece wide. But instead of gathering like the pattern says, I added a total of 8 manly tucks. 4 in the front and 4 in the back. So my assignment for this past week? finished ahead of schedule! In fact, my son wore them to church yesterday.
And my favorite? I carefully cut out one of the back welt pockets from the original pants, and then appliqued it to the butt of the overalls.
I giggle every time my kid walks by.
My boyfriend in second grade had a coat with a pocket in the back. I'd slip "check yes or no" notes into it. Too bad my baby can't read. Or reach behind his back.

If you want a pair...
Church Waders
tutorial
Needed:
1 Lil Blue Boo Paper Dress Pattern (and the notions, etc called for therein)
1 large pair of men's dress slacks. I think these were, like, a 40 waist.
Cut the dress slacks out along the side hems.
Using a pair of pants that currently fit the child to wear the Church Waders, trace a pant leg pattern.
Make the rise (from crotch to top) exagerated, since it needs to hit at the chest. I measured my son and found I needed 10 inches finished, so I did about 13 inches unfinished. Make the waist 1/2 of the recommended length in the pattern) Cut out four.
**If you cut low to the bottom of the pants, you can use the existing cuffs for the finished cuffs on the Waders. And if you cut the long side on the fold, you can skip the side hem. I didn't think to do this until too late. darn.**
Carefully cut out the back welt pocket, making sure to leave the inside pocket lining intact.
Cut out all other pieces as needed in the pattern.
Sew side hems of both legs.
Join legs as you would any other pants.
Place, pin and applique the welt pocket to the bum of the pants
Measure and make tucks. You'll have to do some math, factering the chest piece from the pattern. After some changes, mine were 2 inches from the center seam, and then 1.25 inches long and apart.
Finish as explained in pattern.
Super easy and super cute!
Hey there, Handsome.
oh, and I also made the bow tie
thankyouverymuch.

I was trying to explain to Doug about the overalls (the pair with the airplanes) and they are just like his waders. He got it then. What a darling model you have! Good job on your sewing adventures.
