Right-angle Seam or Corner Turns

Right-angle Seam, or Corner Turns
As with Curved Seams, you're going to want the needle to be positioned down, in the fabric every time you stop while sewing this technique.  So, if your machine offers a needle positioning feature, program it now.  Otherwise, just remember to move the needle into the fabric before raising the presser foot.

Okay? Okay.

Lay first piece of fabric right side up

Place second piece on top of the first with right sides facing, matching stitch line to stitch line (where you're going to sew) **Angles will not meet** Also, this took me a trial run to figure out, but you want the top fabric to over lap the selvage edge of the bottom: see picture.  I suppose this is what was meant by "matching stitch line to stitch line".  But as with so much in my life, I had to screw it up first to figure it out.  But now?  Totally makes sense! :)

Stitch to the corner.  Needle down.  Raise presser foot.

Carefully clip the bottom layer of fabric into the corner.  This was a bit tricky

also, it was hard to photograph.  You can kind of see the ends of my snipping sissors along the lower right hand edge.

See the cute little snipped corner?  Just the bottom fabric, leave the top alone.

With needle down and presser foot still up, pivot the top fabric over so that the perpendicular edges of both fabrics meet

Lower presser foot and continue to sew until seam is completed

Again, the Book just stops there.  But I pressed to one side to finish things off

The bottom side.
And seriously! check.out how well those magic marker lines lined up! shazam! I'm getting better already!

Finished side
Nevermind the bit of puckering in the corner. I'm way too distracted by the above matching lines to worry about puckering.

The Book says:  "A seam with a corner turn is usually featured in a style line.  The sewing method used to turn a corner can be applied to any angular seam found."

I actually needed this technique just a few weeks ago and tried to wing it on my own, without much pretty success.  So yay! for learning it now!
